The Gold Watch
By Ponjikkara Raphy
The story of "The Gold Watch" written by Ponjikkara Raphy, a malayali essayist, revolves around the life of a poorly-paid factory worker Sanku. He is an extremely poor worker who finds it quite difficult to accomplish the day-to-day needs of his family. He is in extreme poverty and suffers a lot to just fill the stomach of his family.
Along with these difficulties, Sanku is in debt. He has a considerable amount to be paid to various people included the tea-shop owner and the fisher woman. He had also taken loan to pay for the crematory services of his mother. He had to pay back the money along with the interest.
With all these horrific thoughts in mind, Sanku found it difficult to sleep at night. He dreaded these thoughts and couldn't sleep a wink. It was then he remembered the fact that his boss [an engineer] used to leave his golden watch atop his table while he went for lunch. Sanku planned to steal the watch.
The very next day, Sanku sneaks into the engineer's office and steals the watch. Even though his mind pulled him back several times, his plight made him steal the watch. After stealing he felt that he would be caught and he would be dismissed from work. These thoughts made him replace the watch back on the top and the miseries of his life continues.
Values shown by Sanku:
Sanku is a honest man as his mind pulled him back several times when he was tempted to steal the watch. It was his misery that made him do the forbidden act. Even then, Sanku must be treated as a coward as he directly thought of stealing the watch instead of thinking some other plans. It must be also noted that Sanku loves his family as he goes for all these things to make his family debt-free and happy.
