Nelson Mandela opposed the Apartheid regime in his country. He started a protest against the racial discrimination that prevailed in South Africa and was tried for treason by the white south African government. He and seven others were Sentenced to life Imprisonment in 1964 for daring to oppose the Apartheid regime. He spent the next 28 years in South Africa's most dread prison, Robben Island.
After 28 years of Imprisonment Nelson Mandela walked out of the jail as a free man. Then he became the first President of the Republic Of South Africa.

He was the country's first black head of state and the first elected in a fully representative democratic election.
