✪Allotrope of phosphorus ✪
Phosphorus has many allotropes. But there are three main allotopic form of phosphorus is
- White phosphorus
- Red phosphorus
- Black phosphorus
➽ White Phosphorus :
- It is a waxy and translucent solid.
- It is very delicate and need proper handling.
- It is insoluble in water.
- It catches fire suddenly in the air at around 35°C
➽ Red Phosphorus :
- It is iron-grey in colour
- It is a radiant and bright crystalline solid.
- It doesn't dissolved in water.
- We can find it in state of a polymeric solid.
➽ Black Phosphorus :
- It is most stable allotrope of phosphorus.
- It has a layered structure.
- It found in two forms alpha black phosphorus and beta black phosphorus.
- Beta black conducts electricity while beta black doesn't.
There are different allotropic forms of phosphorus in nature . The important allotropic forma of phosphorus are White phosphorus, Black phosphorus and Red phosphorus
1).Translucent in appearance like white waxy solid.
2). poisonous in nature.
3).Less stable and more reactive.
4).when mixed with carbon disulfide it dissolves.
5).Does not dissolved in water.
6).Glows in dark.
1).Has iron grey lustre.
2).Odourless.
3). Solubility properties: does not dissolve in water and carbon disulfide.
4).Does not glow in dark.
5). Chemically white phosphorus is more reactive then red phosphorus.
6). Nonpoisonous
alpha-Black and bita-Black are two forms of phosphorus. when red phosphorus heated in a sealed tube at 803k , a alpha-black form is formed. it can be sublimed in the air and has either rhombohedral crystals or opaque monoclinic .It does not oxidise in air. When white form is heated under high pressure at 473k bita-Black is formed.
