after prolong exposure of these metals in environments conditions

some of them such as magnesium and alluminium develops a protective layer by reacting with different gasses present in atmosphere(usually oxygen) which protects them from further oxidation

and when we rub sandpaper we can see shiny surface below that protective layer.

but In iron we study a separate term I.e rusting
