Avogadro's Law

The law was proposed by Amadeo Avogadro in 1811. The law states that the "total number of atoms/molecules of a gas is directly proportional to the volume occupied by the gas at constant temperature and pressure."

Application of Avogadro's law

  • It helps to determine the molecular formula of gaseous compounds.
  • It helps to determine the number of atoms in the molecule of a gas.
  • It could explain Gay Lussac's law(P=kT): whereT=temperature P=pressure,  and K=constant.
  • It gives a relation between gram molecular weight and the volume of the gas at standard temperature and pressure.
