Quick lime is diatomic whereas slaked lime is pentatomic.

Quick lime is calcium oxide or CaO.

since it has one calcium molecule and one oxygen molecule,

its atomicity would be = 1+1 = 2

similarly,

Slaked lime is Ca(OH)_{2} or calcium hydroxide.

Since it has one calcium molecule, 2 oxygen molecules, and 2 hydrogen molecules,

its atomicity would be = 1+2+2 = 5

Hence quick lime is diatomic whereas slaked lime is pentatomic.

Atomicity of quick lime and slaked lime

Explanation:

  • Quick lime: The chemical formula of quick lime is Calcium oxide (CaO) and it is a chemical compound which is most widely used.
  • Slaked lime: The chemical formula of slaked lime is Calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)₂) and it is an inorganic compound.
  • Atomicity is defined as the number of atoms present in a molecule.
  • Quick lime have one atom of calcium and one atom of oxygen present in it. The atomicity of the quick lime is 2.
  • Slaked lime have one calcium atom and 2 of each hydrogen and oxygen atoms, so the atomicity of slaked lime is 5.
  • Hence, it can be concluded that the atomicity of quick lime/Calcium oxide (CaO) is 2 and slaked lime/Calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)₂) is 5.
