In the story "Mrs Packletide's Tiger", the titular character Mrs Packletide is indeed a shrewd, money-minded proposition, who seeks for superiority over her rivals. She cannot stand upon envious, proud and boastful people, as she herself shares the same characteristics. Moreover, her character reflects traits similar to a businesswoman - vain, business minded, manipulative, greedy, competitive, materialistic.
In order to be accompanied by her friend, she had to provide the later with materialistic incentives and baits. Also, she had to bribe her companion with her bungalow to keep her mouth shut from revealing the truth behind the tiger hunt.
All these traits could be tallied with aristocratic women who led the so-called 'elite', affluent & lavish lives of superiority.
