Mrs. Viola Knapp Ruffner was a schoolteacher and the second wife of general Lewis Ruffner who
was a salt and coal mine owner in Kanawha County, West Virginia. Mrs. Ruffner was instrumental in
the personal development of Booker T. Washington. He credited her with teaching him the
essentials of Puritan ethic. Mrs. Ruffner along with the General supported his causes and they
became lifelong friends. Mrs. Ruffner was one of the best friends of Booker T. Washington. She was
a New England trained school teacher, a conservative and hardworking person who put education
above everything else.
