There are four characteristics of a particle of matter.
They are as follows :-
- The particles of matter are very small, it's negligible.
- The particles of matter attract each other.
- The particles of matter are constantly moving.
- The particles of matter have spaces between them.
☞ The particles of matter are very small, it's negligible :-
- The particles of matter are very-very small. We can't see them through our naked eyes.
- As matter is made up of tiny particles of atom, they are not visible to us. It needs a powerful microscope to be seen.
- Eg:- When few drops of Dettol is mixed in water, whole water gives the smell of Dettol. After diluting this dettol mixed water, it gives the same smell. This proves that particles of matter are very small.
☞ The particles of matter attract each other :-
- There are some forces of attraction between the particles of matter which bind them together.
- This force of attraction is different in different kinds of matter.
- Eg:- If we take chalk and and an iron nail, it will be easier for us to break the chalk then the iron nail, as it has more force of attraction then the chalk.
☞ The particles of matter are constantly moving :-
- Particles of matter are in constant motion.
- They are faster in room temperature.
- Eg:- When we burn an incense stick in a corner, its smell spreads all around the room. This shows that particles of matter are constantly moving.
☞ The particles of matter have spaces between them :-
- All particles matter contains a lot of space in between them.
- The kinetic energy of the molecule is greater than the attractive force between them.
- Eg:- If we take some water in a container, after adding sugar and stirring it, we will observe that there is no rise in the water level. This shows that particles of matter have spaces between them.
