Characteristics of viruses:

  • They can proliferate very quickly, but only in host cells that are still alive.
  • They're mutable.
  • They lack cytoplasm and other cellular organelles because they are acellular.
  • They require the metabolic apparatus of the host cell to proliferate because they have no independent metabolism. To put it another way, viruses do not multiply and grow. Instead, fresh viral parts are created and put together inside the infected host cell.
  • Most viruses only have one of DNA or RNA; they rarely have both.
  • non-living things.
  • Non-cellular.
  • contain the capsid, a protein covering.
  • possess a nucleic acid core made up of either DNA or RNA (one or the other - not both)
  • only able to procreate when inside a HOST cell.
