'Shyama' is the narrator of the story "Ranga's Marrige". He is an old man who was full of forthrightness and had great sense of humour. He has more faith in traditional beliefs than Ranga's modern notions. He manipulates Ranga for going into an arrange marriage with a girl name Ratna who was of only eleven years. His actions are for the best of both Ranga and Ratna. In his heart he has only love for both of them. Shyama is also an intelligent man, who has great knowledge of human nature and is almost a psychiatrist in his own right.
