Chemical equation :
2NaCl + 2H2O ---------------- 2NaOH + Cl2 + H2.

The process is chloro-alkali process.

Chloro for chlorine and alkali for sodium hydroxide.In this process hydrogen gas is evolved at cathode and chlorine gas is evolved at anode. The solution which is formed contain sodium hydroxide.
