Ammonia evolves with its characteristic pungent odour when a dry mixture of the two is heated gently.

2NH4Cl + Ca(OH)2 = CaCl2 + 2NH3 + 2H2O

Ca(OH)2 being a stronger base displaces NH3, a weaker base, from the latter’s salt. Any alkali would displace ammonia from ammonium salts.
