Answer:

History of classification

  • the Greek philosopher, Aristotle, was the first to classify animals on the basis of simple visible characters like presence or absence of red blood, whether the body covering the hard or soft and so on
  • His pupil, Theophrastus, was the first to classify plants as herbs, shrubs and trees on the basis of their size

Both the above mentioned the systems of classification are known as artificial system of classification because they are the based on artificial characters that could be the difference in their origin, internal structure or function. for example, in case of neem and pine trees, both are likely to be placed in the same group but both have a number of different characteristics. In case of animals, both the birds and insects have wings so both were placed in the same group, but in reality, both are different organisms.

Linnaeus in 1758 gave Two-Kingdom Classification. It is the most scientific method of classification. He classified all living organisms into two major kingdoms - Plantae(plants that could prepare food thier own) and Animalia(animals that depend on plants directly or indirectly for their food). However, he failed to categories few organisms, such as:

  • Euglena, an organism which possess chlorophll like plant but lacks cell wall, therefore, it can neither be grouped under plants nor animals.
  • Viruses which are non-living particles and behave like living only when they come in contact with living cell.

These shortcomings led to idea of new system classification as the Five Kingdom classification

Hope this will help you
