TORNADO

A tornado is simply a violently rotating column of air between the bottom of a cumuliform cloud and ground.
It is about as wide as 800-1000 m and lasts upto an hour.
A forewarning can be made 10-15 minutes before the phenomemon actually begins.

HURRICANE

As the storm crosses a speed of 119 kmph, it is termed as a Hurricane.
The term “Hurricane” is used in the Atlantic, Caribbean Sea, central and northeast Pacific. They are called “Typhoons” in the northwest Pacific. In the Bay of Bengal and the Arabia Sea, they are called “Cyclones”. Different names for the same entity!
Hurricanes can be as wide as 100 kms and can last for a few days.
The East Coast of the US is heavily impacted by hurricanes than the West Coast.
The Hurricanes have a tendency to move in west direction (due to East to West Trade Winds). Thus, when formed in the Atlantic Ocean, hurricanes hit the East Coast. Whereas, when it is formed in the Pacific ocean, it drifts away from the West Coast!
They are formed in warm waters of the Atlantic ocean from where it gets the sufficient thermal energy. The Pacific is cooler, hence powerful hurricanes cannot thrive here
