Answer Physisorption (Physical adsorption)

1. Weak vander waals forces are present between the adsorbate molecules and the adsorbent.

2. The enthalpy of adsorption is low (20 to 40 kJ/mol).

3. Occurs at low temperature and decreases with increase in temperature.

4. It is reversible.

5.No significant activation energy is required.

6.It forms multimolecular layers.

Chemisorption (chemical adsorption)

1.Strong chemical forces similar to chemical bonds  are present between the adsorbate molecules and the adsorbent.

2.The enthalpy of adsorption is high (80 to 240 kJ/mol).

3. Occurs at high temperature and increases with increase in temperature.

4. It is irreversible.

5.Usually, high activation energy is required.

6.It forms unimolecular layers.
