Direct uses of forest resources
(a) Food:
Since time immemorial, forests provided food to its inhabitants. As mobility of these peoples are confined within the forest land, entire food products are gathered by them from the forest trees. The people residing outside the forest land also benefited by the forest food products.
(b) Clothing:
Primitive people, particularly the people residing in polar region, still collets their clothing material directly from the forest.
(c) Shelter:
Forest provides shelter to its inhabitants. The houses in every corner of the earth still relies heavily on the wood supplied from the forest for woodwork in their houses.
Indirect uses of forest resources
(a) Influence on climate:
Water budget of the area is influenced by transpiration process and extraction of underground water through roots.
(b) Influence on natural disasters:
Forest cover is a natural protection of an area from many natural calamities and disasters. It is generally believed that ruthless destruction of Mangrove forest in Sundarbans in Bangladesh may be one of the major reasons for recurrence of cyclonic disasters in that country.
(c) Shelter:
Forest is the home of several rare and endangered animals, birds and insect species.
