When ethanol is heated in presence of alkaline potassium permanganate the product formed is ethanoic acid.

               1)KMnO₄

C₂H₅OH----------------->CH₃COOH

The above reaction is oxidation reaction because alcohol group changes into carboxylic acid. KMnO₄ is an oxidizing agent.It is used in many reaction for the purpose of oxidation.For conversion of aldehyde to carboxylic acid is also done by reacting with KMnO₄
