River pollution is defined as the mixing of unwanted materials and waste in the river water.

Following are some of the factors which lead to River pollution:-

• Anthropogenic activities- One of the main contributor in pollution of river water is Anthropogenic or human activities. The domestic and industrial waste generated during domestic chores and production process respectively are the human led activities whose deposition goes to the River water or any water sources and contaminate them.

• Natural Calamities- The Natural disaster also cause pollution of rivers. When the disasters come in the form of floods or landslide, it carries all the waste particles from different sources and deposited into the river.

• Oil spills- The cases of oil spills is not new in the causes of river pollution. The oils while carrying through sea gets spilled over into the Oceans water which endanger the life of various aquatic animals and thus distributed to rivers also.

Hence the above situation can be counter by Indian Government as well as by the common people in following ways:-

• Proper treatment of industrial waste before running off into the water bodies directly.

• Over utilization of fertilizer and pesticides can be stopped.

• Fees and Penalties should be imposed by the Government.

• Clean Ganga like projects should be implemented to prevent rivers from getting polluted.
