Write the following statement in the form of equation :

i) The sum of two numbers is 16 and their difference is 8.

ii) The cost of 2kg apples and 1kg grapes is Rs. 160 in a fruit shop. In the same shop, the cost of 4kg apples and 2kg grapes is Rs. 300.

1) x+y= 16

X-y= 8

2x= 24

X= 12

Y= 4

2) let apples be x and grapes y.

2x+y= 160

4x+2y= 300

Answer:

(1) let the numbers be x and y

sum the numbers = 16

difference of the numbers = 8

x+y = 16

x-y = 8

(2) let cost of apples = x

cost of grapes = y

cost of 2kg apples = 2x

cost of 1 kg grapes = 1y

2x + 1y = 160

cost of 4 kg apples = 4x

cost of 2 kg grapes = 2y

4x + 2y = 300
