Speed of light in air = c

Speed of light in a medium = v

Magnetic permeability in air = Yo

Electrical permittivity in air = Xo

Magnetic permeability in medium = Y

Electrical permittivity in medium = X

1/4piXo = 9 * 10^9........(1)

Yo/4pi = 10^-7.....(2)

Equation (1) divided by (2)

1/Xo*Yo = 9*10^16

1/Xo*Yo = (3*10^8)^2

c^2 = 1/Xo*Yo

c= (1/Xo*Yo)^0.5......(3)

Similarly in a medium --

v = (1/X*Y)^0.5 .......(4)

Equation (3)/(4)

c/v = (X*Y/Xo*Yo)^0.5

We know that c/v = Absolute refractive index of the medium which is n

`Y/Yo= Yr (Relative magnetic permeability)

X/Xo= Xr (Relative electrical permittivity)

so n=(XrYr)^0.5
