Metals are generally located at left side of the periodic table and are Electropositive in nature.
They have the tendency to loose electron to acquire inert gas configuration.
Hence, they have valency 1 2 or 3.
Whereas, in case of non- metals , they are located at the right side of periodic table and are Electronegative in nature.
They have the tendency to accept electron , to acquire inert gas configuration.
Hence, non-metals have valency 4,5,6 or 7.
