The important characteristics of different types of habitats are explained below:.

Characteristics of Terrestrial Habitat:

Availability of water-

Terrestrial habitat has low water availability as compared to aquatic habitat.

Availability of light-

Abundant amount of light is available in terrestrial habitat. While in aquatic habitat, the availability of light varies. In deeper regions, a very scarce amount of light can reach.

Availability of oxygen and other gases-

Concentration of oxygen is more in terrestrial habitat as compared to the aquatic one.

Variation in temperature-

A great temperature difference can be noticed in the terrestrial habitat between day and night temperatures and seasonal temperatures as well. On the other hand, the difference is low in aquatic habitats.

During the daytime, an ample amount of sunlight falls on land. While at night, the temperature falls down.

Characteristics of Aquatic Habitat:

Availability of water-

In general, an ample amount of water is available.

Availability of light-

The sunlight availability varies greatly in aquatic habitats depending upon the depth. Surface water receives sunlight. But, the availability of sunlight at deeper depths becomes scarce.

Variation in temperature-

Not much variation in temperature can be noticed in the case of aquatic habitats. Aquatic habitats are not exposed to extreme heat or wind.

Note-

Terrestrial habitat comprises organisms living on land. Examples of terrestrial habitat- grasslands, forest, wetlands, mountain, field, etc

Aquatic habitat comprises organisms living in the water. Examples of aquatic habitat- ponds, oceans, lakes, etc.

Characteristics

Terrestrial Habitat-

  • Presence of ample amount of sunlight
  • Great temperature variations
  • Higher availability of gases
  • Lack of water

Aquatic Habitat-

  • Ample amount of water is available
  • Lack of sunlight
  • Temperature variations are not much
