Explanation:

Aluminium ore is called bauxite (Al 2O 3). The bauxite is purified to yield a white powder – aluminium oxide (also known as alumina) – from which aluminium can be extracted. The extraction is done by electrolysis , but first the aluminium oxide must be melted so that electricity can pass through it.

Explanation:

Important ore of alminium is bauxite (Al2O3.2H20 ) and cryolite Na3ALF6 .

  • Principal of extraction of alminium from Bauxite .

The natural bauxite contains silica , ferric oxide etc impurities . these impurities are seperated by Bayer's process hall's serpek process .

Al2O3 + NaOH + 3H20-----> 2Na [AL(OH)4)] aq

2NaOH +SiO2 -----> Na2sio3 + H2O

Na[Al(OH)4] -------> Al(OH)3 + NaOH

The obtained Al(OH)3 is filtered and washed . now it is calcinated . Ad a result this alumunia is obtained . Now cryolite is added in alumunia ans electricity is carried out in carbon electrode containing cell.After electrolysis alminium is obtained at cathode and oxygen is obtained at anode .
