Answer:

It is called Tollens' reagent, from the name of Bernhard Tollens who invented it. It has nochemical formula, being a mixture of Silver Nitrate and Ammonia in solution. Its active ingredient is Di-ammine-silver(I) complex ( [Ag(NH₃)₂]⁺ ). Alternatively, aqueous ammonia can be added directly to silver nitrate solution.

The IUPAC name of Tollen's reagent is diamine silver(I)hydroxide.

  • The chemical formula of Tollen's reagent is [Ag(NH_3)_2]OH.
  • Here the oxidation state of Ag is +1.
  • Due to the presence of the OH group the hydroxide term will come.
  • In this complex two amino groups are present so, diamine will come.
  • For the presence of Ag, the word silver will come.
  • So, the IUPAC name is diamine silver(I)hydroxide.
