 \LARGE{ \boxed{ \bold{ \green{Cell \: wall}}}}

✒The cell wall is only found in certain cells like in plants, fungi and bacteria cell. It is an additional protective covering outside the cell membrane or plasma membrane which make the cell rigid.

✒It is generally made up of cellulose which is a kind of carbohydrate. It is dead and permeable to all type of solutes and solvents.

✒Cell wall is made up of middle lamella, primary and secondary wall. The middle lamella is the cementing layer and is common to two cells. It is mainly composed of calcium and magnesium pectate.

✒The primary wall is little elastic in nature and is thinner. It is formed of cellulose microfibrils and polysaccharides. The thicker secondary wall is inner to the primary wall and is mature and have non dividing cells.

✒Cell wall of bacteria like Eubacteria is made up of peptidoglycan or murein. In some cells, it have can extra covering present outside the cell wall which is known as glycocalyx. It is in the form of loose sheath called Slime layer and sometimes also it is thick and tough covering called capsule.

✒In fungi cell wall is made up of chitin.

Functions:

  • It helps to keep the cell rigid.
  • It gives mechanical support to the cell.
