you need a container with a solvent, a stand to support the test and some blotting paper, either a strip or a square. Place a dot of the ink at the bottom (or bottom corner) or the blotting paper and suspend it in the solvent and as the solvent creeps up the blotting paper using capillary action, the elements of the ink will be separated. It is feasible that the blotting paper square could be turned 90° (with the strip of colour at the bottom) and the separate elements further separated by a second solvent. DNA testing is used in a similar manner to the square test but using a gel substrate rather than the blotting paper.
