When drift velocity increases relaxation time decreases as electrons move the distance in which they frequently collide faster. However their product (which is the mean distance the electron travels before undergoing collision) remains almost constant unless the temperature is changed which affects the vibrations of molecules present in the substance which in turn affects the average distance in which the electron collides with a nucleus when it is set to motion. Basically vt remains a constant unless temperature is changed. However this doesn't hold true at really high voltages where the collissions increase the temperature by a significant amount.
