The land ceiling is a government initiative for fixing the maximum amount of landholding that can be held by a family or an individual.
If any family or individual had more land than the prescribed ceiling limit, it was taken away by the government. By 1961-62, the Land Ceiling Act was passed by all State Governments but the limits of land that one can hold differed from state to state.
Hence, for bringing uniformity to it, a new Central land ceiling policy was made in 1971.
The Land Ceiling Act was brought in to usher uniformity and the excess land was
(i) shared among small landless labourers, tenants and farmers
(ii) given to village panchayat or
(iii) Provided to cooperative farming societies.
