The absorption of iron mainly takes place in the small intestine,i.e. the duodenum and the upper part of jejunum, by the enterocytes present in the intestinal lining.

In order to be absorbed by the enterocytes, iron needs to be present either in ferrous form( Fe2+) or in the form of heme protein.

This conversion of ferric (Fe3+) to (Fe2+) form is done by an enzyme, ferric reductase present on the brush border of the enterocytes.

The iron( in its Fe2+ form) then gets transported into the cell with the help of a transporter- DMT1.

In case of a heme protein, it gets transported with the help of heme carrier protein1 or HCP1.
