Answer:MERITS:-

1)J.J Thomson explained neutralisation of an atom due to presence of positively and negatively charged sub atomic particles which were later called as proton and electron.

2)He was the first to give any information about structure of an atom.

DEMERIT:-

1)HE explained neutralisation but couldn't explain the stability of an atom because he was not knowing the path of electron and proton..

Answer:

Scientists need a defined structure for an atom and its interaction with other atoms in order to have a better knowledge of how matter transforms from one form to another. The renowned Thomson atomic model was put out by English physicist J.J. Thomson in 1898, shortly after the discovery of electrons.

Explanation:

Merits of Thomson atomic model:

  • An atom resembles a positive-charged sphere with electrons (negatively charged particles) within, according to the postulates of Thomson's atomic model.
  • An atom has no overall charge and is electrically neutral because the positive and negative charges are of equal magnitude.
  • Thomson's atomic model has characteristics of both a watermelon and a plum pudding. Because the electrons in the model resemble the dried fruits contained in a sphere of positive charge much like a spherical plum pudding, it has the appearance of a plum pudding.

Demerits of Thomson atomic model:

  • The general neutrality of an atom was described by Thomson's atomic theory. Its presumption that an atom's entire mass is dispersed evenly across the atom was at odds with several experimental results. Thomson's atomic model was in conflict with Rutherford's gold foil experiment, which showed that most of the space in an atom is empty. The plum pudding atomic model was therefore proven to be insufficient to explain the structure of an atom.
  • The limitations of Thomson's atomic model sparked more investigation into the atomic structure. Rutherford carried out several tests to ascertain the atomic structure because the plum pudding atomic model lacked experimental support.

Hence, the merits and demerits of Thomson's atomic model is explained above.
