First we talk about merits -
1. India became self sufficient in production of food grains specially wheat and Rice.
2. It gives employment and worked indirectly to stop Youth in Pakistan’s bordering states mostly in Punjab, doing illegal works.
3. It increases the share of indian import in International trade.
4. It insured food safety of Every Indian Citizens.
5. It became easier to grow these crops even in less rainfall.
6. It increases irrigation infrastructure in our country specially in Northern India.
Now we will have a look at demerits -
1. It made the soil reproduction process very hard because of excessive use of land for farming.
2. It started polluting land and rivers just because of Pesticides uses. (Pesticides flows in river in the rainy season decreases water purity)
3. It creates inequality in income between states of India. States like Punjab and Haryana are much far better than Bihar and Jharkhand.
