The compound formed is Ethyl acetate .

Chemical formula = \mathsf{CH_3COOC_2H_5}

The structural formula is :

     H    O         H   H

      |     ||           |     |

H - C -  C - O - C - C - H

     |                   |     |

     H                H   H

What is esterification ?

Esterification is the process by which acetic acid react with alcohol in the presence of an acidic medium giving a fully smelling compound called ester.

Reaction :

\mathsf{CH_3COOH+C_2H_5===>CH_3COOC_2H_5+H_2O}

Acetic acid + Ethyl alcohol ====> Ethyl acetate + water

Test for acetic acid :

If we add alcohol in the presence of acidic environment , an acetic acid will give fruity smelling ester.

This acts as test for acetic acid.

The reaction is also reversible.

We can prevent the reversible reaction using concentrated sulphuric acid.
