The constitution of India gives the citizens of our country some basic rights that cannot be taken away from them. These rights are called fundamental rights.

There are six fundamental rights mentioned in the constitution of India-

  1. Right to equality: All citizens citizens irrespective of their religion, gender, caste and place of birth would be treated equally. They would also be given equal protection by the law.
  2. Right against exploitation: No individual would be forced to work under unfair conditions and without pay. Also, all children below 14 years of age are not allowed to be employed.
  3. Right to freedom of religion: All citizens are free to choose and follow any religion of their choice.
  4. Right to constitutional remedies: All citizens are free to move the court in case their fundamental rights are taken away or threatened.
  5. Cultural and educational rights: Thereare many small groups in our country which are different in terms of their language or religion etc. These groups are called minorities. The constitution allows minorities to preserve the culture and establish educational institutions of their choice.
  6. Right to freedom: All citizens are free to-
  • speak
  • assemble peacefully and without arms
  • travel, reside and settle anywhere within the country and choose any profession.

Recently, the constitution of India has also made education free and compulsory for all children between 6 and 14 years of age. It is called the right to education.
