[Cu(CN)₄]²⁻

  • The name of the complex is tetracyanocuprate(II) ion.
  • Then oxidation state of copper in the complex is +2.
  • During the formation of this complex, it is believed that the only unpaired 3d-electrons of Cu+2 ion (3d9) gets promoted to one of the 4p-orbitals thus making the vaailable one vacant d-orbital.
  • The Cu+2 ion, therefore, undergoes dsp2 hybridisation.
  • The comples thus formed is square planar and is paramagnetic due to the presence of one unpaired electron.
