In organic chemistry, a saturated compound is one which has all single bonds in between the carbon-carbon atoms. Most of the saturated hydrocarbons are alkanes. So, the structures in which the carbon atoms are arranged in a ring are called as cycloalkanes, with a general formula of CnH₂n

In organic chemistry, a saturated compound is one which has all single bonds in between the carbon-carbon atoms. Most of the saturated hydrocarbons are alkanes. So, the structures in which the carbon atoms are arranged in a ring are called as cycloalkanes, with a general formula of CnH₂n.

There are many saturated cycloalkanes. The cycloalkane with the least number of carbon atoms is - Cyclopropane with 3 carbon atoms. Each carbon-carbon bond is a single bond. So, there will be 3 C-C bonds. Each carbon is attached to 3 hydrogen atoms. So, there will a total of 3 x 3 C-H bonds = 9 C-H bonds. So, a total of 12 single bonds in a cyclopropane structure.

Similarly, the number of single bonds can be calculated in other saturated cycloalkanes like cyclobutane, cyclopentane, etc.
