The three processes associated with the absorption of water in plants are:
1. Osmosis (endosmosis)
2. Root pressure
3. Transpiration pull
- Osmosis is the process of movement of water or solvent molecules from regions of higher concentration to regions of lower concentration through a semi-permeable membrane.
- In this case, as the water moves inside the cells through single-celled root hairs, it is called endosmosis. This is followed by root pressure where there is a transverse movement of water from the vascular bundle to the leaves.
- Active absorption takes place in tall trees due to transpiration pull of the water column where there is a constant loss of water vapour creating a vacuum to rise the demand of “water absorption” through ‘roots’.
