Sub atomic particles are majorly proton ( positive unit charge ), electron ( negative unit charge ) and neutron ( no charge ). Proton and neutron have similar mass and electron has negligible mass.

Thus, the atomic number( Z )= number of electrons or protons present in the atom( both are in equal number in atom )

mass number( A )= mass of protons + mass of neutrons

[ NOTE: There are other sub atomic particles such as positron, neutrino, anti neutrino etc. but the main particles are the ones mentioned above. ]
