Ojapali is divided in two division: Byah Ojapali and Sukannani Ojapali.  

EXPLANATION:

  • The dresses of the performers of both these divisions of Ojapali are different. In the Byah Ojapali, the Oja wears a chapkonand, a round pajama that becomes attractive like a flower by his dance movements and it also shows evidently Mughal influence.
  • A half boat like a turban, colored pachara, a cloth girdle, Nupur, Gamkharu, a garland, a blaze of Chandana, a round gold ear ornament, and ring - these are seen to be used by the Oja. The palis use Chapkon, white dhoti, Gamusa, a blaze of Chandana, and oval like turban, On the contrary, in Sukannani Ojapali, the Oja wears a total white dress. The palis use Chapkan and Dhoti.
  • The Oja wears an oval-like turban while the palis of this Ojapali, wear turbans which is like a peacock in its certain posture. Silver madoli, Golden dhol madoli, Silver gamkharu, and ring¸ Gold ear- ornament - all these ornaments play role in decorating the Oja of the Ojapali performance.
  • In addition, the Oja and the palis have a red blaze on their brow. The cymbals (musical instrument) played in both the Ojapalis are too different. The cymbal played in the Sukannani Ojapali is flat whereas in the Byah Ojapali is round. The core subject of this Byah Ojapali are Mahabharata and Ramayana epics, whereas in Sukannani Ojapali  it aims at presenting the sad story of Behulaa-Lakhindar from Padma Purana
