Answer:

Metals react with oxygen to form basic oxides. Metallic oxides are basic in nature because they react with dilute acids to form salt and water. They also react with water to form metal hydroxides which are alkaline in nature because these metal hydroxides release OH− ions in solution.

Answer:

Metals + Oxygen ----> Metal Oxide

Metal Oxide + Water ----> Metal Hydroxide

Explanation:

When a metal reacts with oxygen its respective oxide is formed. This oxide is always basic as it releases OH negative ions when added to water.

For ex:

1.Mg (s) + O (g) ----->  MgO

Magnesium + Oxygen ---> Magnesium Oxide

2. MgO + H2O ----> Mg(OH)2

Magnesium Oxide + Water ----> Magnesium Hydroxide

When we dissolve magnesium hydroxide in water it turns blue litmus to red and hence is basic in nature.

Hope I helped!
