the 18 vertical columns called as groups and 7 horizontal lines called as periods. they are all arranged in order of their atomic numbers.
each group is divided by electronic configuration i.e, s,p,d,f block.

modern periodic table consists of seven rows called periods and eighteen columns called groups.
metallic character decreases on moving from left to right in a period whereas metallic character increases on moving down the group.
