The modern periodic table has
18 Groups
7 Periods

When we move left to right in a period the metallic character decreases as the number of electrons increase hence the effective nuclear charge increased. Thus the ability to lose electrons becomes less.

Down a group, metallic character increases as the shell level increases. So the electrons are further away from the nucleus and can be lost easily.

On moving from left to right the electronegativity decreases and as we move down a group electronegativity increases
