*There are 18 vertical columns called groups.
*Horizontally there are 7 rows called periods.
*Metals are defined as substances which are electropositive in nature and non metals as electronegative in nature. In a periodic table from left to right METTALIC CHARACTER DECREASES & NON METTALIC CHARACTER INCREASES.
*On descending a group METTALIC CHARACTER DECREASES.
Eg: groups 14 & 15 begin with carbon and nitrogen which are non metals . The group end with lead & bismuth respectively which are metals. The oxides of the elements also become basic.
Hope this helps you out!
