There are 7 periods and 18 groups in the modern periodic table. Metallic character decreases from left to right across a period because as atomic size goes on decreasing so tendency to lose electrons decreases. But down a group metallic character increases as atomic size increases and tendency to lose electrons increases.

Answer:

periods=7

groups=18

a-Metallic character decreases as you move across a period in the periodic table from left to right. This occurs as atoms more readily accept electrons to fill a valence shell than lose them to remove the unfilled shell.

b- increases as the size of the atom increases along the group it can lose more electrons easily as the no. of shell increases...
