When Shift is used along with another letter, it returns the letter in the opposite case.
For example, Shift + D will return uppercase 'd', Shift + Y will return uppercase 'y'.
Keep in mind, that if ever your Caps Lock is switched on, and you use Shift along with a letter, the resultant letter will be in lowercase.
So supposing my Caps Lock was on, and I used Shift + D, I would get a lowercase 'D'.
This method is also used as a common alternative for those who find it difficult each time they need to switch on and off their Caps Lock, reducing typing efficiency.
When Shift is used long with numbers, they return special characters. These characters are visible on most keyboards of a laptop, they're present above the numbers on display.
