Answer:

Rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries normally operate (discharge) with the following oxidation and reduction half-cell reactions. NiO(OH)(s) + H2O(l) + e– → Ni(OH)2(s) + OH–(aq) E° = 0.60 V Write out a balanced overall cell reaction.

The redox reaction involved in the Nickel-Cadmium battery is:

Cd (s) + 2Ni(OH)₃ (s) → CdO (s) + 2Ni(OH)₂ (s) + H₂O (l)

More about Ni-Cd battery:

  • It is a type of secondary battery i.e. capable of being reused by passing current in opposite direction.
  • It has longer life as compared to lead storage cell( another type of secondary cell).
  • The nickel-cadmium cell have a  jelly roll arrangement demarcated by a layer in moist alkali.

Although, it has a longer life but its usage is avoided due to the high manufacturing cost.
