Physical properties of Metals

1) They are malleable.This means they can be easily hammered without breaking
2) They are ductile.This means they can be easily drawn into wires.
3) They are lustrous.Most of the metals have a bright shine.Examples - Silver, Gold,Copper.
4) They are sonorous.They produce a shrill sound when they are stricken.
5) Metals are generally solids.There are some exceptions like mercury that is liquid at room temperature.
6) Metals are generally strong.They have high tensile strength.Metals like iron,aluminum are used to construct structures like building ,bridges,etc.But there are exceptions like sodium and potassium that are so soft that they can be easily cut with a knife.
7) They have high boiling and melting point.But again metals like sodium, potassium,mercury have low melting points.
8) Metals have high density.Exceptions- Sodium, potassium with lithium having the lowest density.
9) Metals are good conductors of heat and electricity.But some metals like lead, mercury,chromium are poor conductors of heat and electricity.


Physical properties of Non metals.

1) They are not malleable.They break when they are hammered to.
2) They are not ductile rather they are brittle.Non metals cannot be drawn into wires rather they will break.
3) They are not lustrous.Usually non metals are non-lustrous.But one exception is iodine that has lustre.
4) They are not sonorous.You won't get any sound when you strike any non metal
5) Non metals are generally solids and gases,exception bromine that is liquid.
6) Metals are not strong.For example if you keep an object of heavy weight on Graphite sheet it will break.They don't have high tensile strength.Exception - Diamond ,an allotrope of carbon that is the hardest substance known
7) They have low boiling and melting points

8) Non metals have low density.Exception - Diamond that has a very high density.
9) Non metals are poor conductors of heat and electricity.Exception - Graphite that is a very good conductor of electricity .
