1.Hydrochloric acid, HCl (aq) is a strong acid, meaning that when it is dissolved in water, all the molecules ionize to form hydrogen ions, H+(aq), and chloride ions, Cl - (aq).

2.The reason that the hydrogen and chlorine ions dissociate when in an aqueous solution is that HCl ispolar covalent compound (see "Structure and Properties" for explanation on polarity).
