Human blood seems to be a red liquid to the human eye, but it contains four unique constituents when examined under a microscope: plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets.
Procedure for observing blood:-
- To begin, sterilise the pin by passing it through a flame. Then, with your index finger, lightly puncture your little finger. Squeeze your finger over a drop of blood on a slide and cover it with the coverslip.
- Place the slide on the microscope stage and use low power to bring it into focus (100X). Switch to high power after adjusting the illumination (400X).
- Hundreds of microscopic red blood cells should be visible; our bloodstream contains billions of them. Red blood cells cannot divide because they lack a nucleus. Red blood cells are constantly produced in the bone marrow and spleen.
- There should be a few white blood cells as well. They are slightly larger than red blood cells and have a nucleus. They have the look of an amoeba and can twist their bodies in whatever direction they want. White blood cells fight illness by consuming foreign bodies. Platelets are relatively little red blood cell fragments.
