Explanation:

To test leaves for the presence of starch one has to do the following steps:-

  • the leaf is boiled in water
  • then the boiled leaf is placed in a boiling tube containing 90% ethanol (ethyl alcohol).
  • The ethanol boils and the green colouring (chlorophyll) is removed from the leaf.
  • The iodine reagent is then added, which causes the green areas on the leaf, where starch is supposedly present, to turn to a blue-black colour.

This indicates the presence of starch in the leaf.

Hope this will help you

\pink{Starch \:  \:  testing\::}

  1. Iodine solution is used to test leaves for the presence of starch.
  2. After a few minutes, the parts of the leaf that contain starch turn the iodine from brown to blue/black.
  3. The leaf on the left is a variegated leaf.
